Family Pizza Night: Homemade Focaccia-Style Sourdough Pizza
There’s something magical about pizza night—it’s one of the few meals that everyone can agree on, and that’s because of toppings of course! As a parent, our family pizza nights is homemade Focaccia-Style Sourdough Pizza Crust. Not only does it yield a perfectly crispy yet chewy crust, but it also tastes heavenly.

Sometimes in our house we make dinner an experience. Usually I’ll have the dough prepared and the toppings out for everyone to choose what they like. It makes it fun spending time together but i’m creating lasting memories with my kids. You should see the glow in my daughter’s eyes when I mention it’s pizza night.
Focaccia-Style Sourdough Pizza Crust Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 2 ½ cups bread flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ cup lukewarm water (adjust as needed)
Directions:
1. Prepare the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the active sourdough starter, bread flour, salt, olive oil, and lukewarm water.
- Add bread flour and salt and mix until a shaggy dough forms, place the dough to the side with a damp cloth over it
- After 30 mins preform first round of stretch and folds
- repeat step 3 a few more time before you let set for 4 more hours
2. First Rise
- Place dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise at room temperature for 4 hours, or until doubled in size.
3. Shape the Crust
- After the first rise, punch down the dough to release any air bubbles, then spread it onto a well-oiled baking sheet or a focaccia pan.
- Use your fingers to dimple the dough all over, then let it rest for 20-30 minutes to puff up slightly.
4. Pizza Topping Station
*note: if you want a crispier crust now would be the time to prebake the dough. Preheat/ Bake at 425 F
Now comes the fun part—creating your own pizza masterpieces! Set up a pizza topping station with an array of toppings, including classic favorites like mozerella and fresh basil. This is a great way to sneak in some more veggies!
Encourage your kids to get creative and build their own pizzas with their favorite toppings. This is not only a fun activity but also a great way to sneak some veggies into their diet.
5. Bake and Enjoy
- Preheat your oven to 425 F.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
